There have been few comic book movies that have garnered the near-unanimous praise that 20th Century Fox’s Logan has received during its initial launch. Not only are critics responding to the mature look at the famed X-Men character, but it’s also been a huge hit over its debut weekend. The final chapter in Hugh Jackman’s run as Wolverine has already grossed over $250 million worldwide, while also posting over $88 million dollars domestically in its opening weekend.

Now that eager fans have gotten their chance to watch Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and newcomer Dafne Keen, light up the screen, it’s hard to not get sentimental. Director James Mangold wrote the hit movie after getting story ideas from Jackman, who both were insistent in making an authentic final chapter for Wolverine.

After wearing the claws for 17 years, Jackman is retiring the role that he defined. In celebration of the unprecedented achievement, both within the superhero movie genre and film history as well, a new featurette has emerged celebrating the actor’s final turn in Logan. Joblo has release the video titled “Legacy” that begins with a brief montage of Wolverine’s journey, from X-Men through Logan, then transitions into a more documentary style that explores Jackman’s efforts to bring Wolverine to life over the years.

It’s hard to find a more iconic connection between a superhero and actor in film history. Christopher Reeve’s turn as Clark Kent in the Superman series and Robert Downey Jr’s run as Tony Stark in the Marvel cinematic universe seem to be Jackman’s closest peers in longevity and star power. However, Reeve never got the opportunity to give his character a fitting end and Jackman still has years on Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man. As noted by Stewart in the above video, the character of Wolverine and Jackman himself, will be forever intertwined in film history.

Logan is a movie that blends multiple genres into a neo-western tone that feels mildly heightened, without the tropes that you might expect from a typical comic book movie. However, now the success of Jackman’s performance, and of the film itself raises many questions for the near future of superhero cinema.

The X-Men universe now has a huge charisma gap with the loss of Jackman. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool character seems firmly entrenched in the growing, R-rated wing of X-verse, so it will be interesting to see how Fox handles the more family-friendly core of X-Men films which Wolverine anchored. Someone new will one day have to step into the daunting shadow that Jackman left behind, whose iconic performance has made it hard to imagine any other actor making the cut.
